EDID9 - Workshop 3:

Digital Identity Pattern Writers Workshop

Refreshments: Coffee, Tea and Lunch provided

“You've done some excellent work, now we're going to help you make it publishable”

The final event in our three-part series of workshops on design patterns for Digital Identity will take the form of a ‘Writer’s Workshop’. This one-day workshop will focus on the finer points of writing patterns that are ready for release and reuse by the wider community. By the end of the day we plan to have refined our group of digital identity patterns (we also welcome any new patterns that you would like to bring to the workshop) and we expect the following outcomes to be achieved:

·      Presentation of the DI patterns at the ‘Future of Digital Identity’ dissemination event in January 2010

·      Publication of the patterns, each with a supporting case-story, under the forthcoming title of ‘Digital Identity Design Patterns’ that will be made freely available and released under a Creative Commons licence

·      Options for publication in a Special Issue of a relevant journal

·      The rights for the individual papers will remain with the authors, and we will provide help in submitting them for further publications e.g. at EuroPLoP 2010 (http://www.hillside.net/europlop/)

Structure of the workshop

The format of the day will be based around two core participatory activities:

1) The first set of activities will involve group discussion and evaluation of our digital identity patterns. We will be facilitating structured group feedback and guidance - directed at refining and focusing each of the patterns. Each author or group of authors will receive detailed advice (shepherding) on how to improve their pattern, ready for publication.

This section will draw on a number of sources including Richard Gabriel’s book from 2002, ‘Writers' Workshops & the Work of Making Things: Patterns, Poetry...’ and Neil Harrison’s ‘A language of shepherding’ (http://hillside.net/language-of-shepherding.pdf)

2) The second activity will be a Pattern Mapping exercise where we will explore the interrelations between the set of patterns that have been submitted and develop a domain map for the digital identity patterns.

What do I need to do next?

Please sign up if you can attend on the day. We will then distribute more detailed instructions to all participants for advance preparations.
